Beatles Hey Jude Album Cover SlickWhat is a cover slick?
Before album jackets were printed directly onto linerboard (cardboard) they were produced by a method called "tip-on":
"A tip-on record jacket involves printing the cover art on sheets of paper, then gluing those sheets to the board stock. The "tip" part of the name comes from how the paper was applied to the underlying board."
In the '60's it was easier and more economical to print higher quality graphics on coated (shiny) stock and then glue them to the cardboard while overlapping 3 of the 4 sides (the 4th was left open for the record to go into the jacket)
This is for just the front cover of the album Hey Jude as released in the USA. It's the original actual slicks that were left over at the printing plant!
