    Description

This is the Sevastopol Monument, the symbol of the city of Sevastopol.
It sits on the disputed Crimean Peninsula, Located in Sevastopol Bay.
The monument was erected in 1905 on the 50th anniversary of the Siege of Sevastopol, during the Crimean War, in which many ships of the Imperial Russian Navy ships were scuttled, most of them part of the Black Sea Fleet.
This is a real show stopper that has it all.
It is very large and very heavy to begin with.
It is made of solid bronze that was then gilded.
The base of the monument is a man-made island and it is topped off with the Russian two headed Romanov Eagle, holding a laurel wreath.
I have always been amazed by the Russian Monuments and the way they always adhered to the Victorian ethic of “Too much is not enough”.
I do not know how old it is but it could predate the Soviet Era when they pretty much stopped using valuable metals like bronze.
The Russian I got it from said he came by it in 1960.
There are no markings on it.
It may have had a base of some sort but I do not see any telltale signs of that.
It measures 5” wide, by 4.75” deep, by 10.5” tall.
